Featured Speaker: Ross Atkinson Ph.D., VA School Certifying Official and Aims Veteran Services Program Manager

Dr. Ross Atkinson is a combat veteran and dedicated educator who enlisted in the U.S. Army in 2009, serving as a communications specialist and deploying to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. His passion for education was sparked while taking online community college courses during his deployment. After transitioning to civilian life in 2012, he earned both a Master's degree in English and a Ph.D. in Education Sciences from Colorado State University (CSU). Today, Dr. Atkinson serves as a VA School Certifying Official and Program Manager for Veteran Services at Aims Community College. In this role, he draws on his own background to help military-connected students access and navigate VA benefits and their transition to civilian life.

In addition to his work at Aims Community College, Dr. Atkinson is an experienced instructor who has previously taught high school English, undergraduate education courses, and now teaches a graduate Action Research course for pre-service teachers at CSU. During his doctoral studies, he received a Dean's Fellowship to research the impact of writing workshops on veterans. Putting this research into practice, he founded the CSU Veterans Writing Workshop—a supportive space for military-affiliated individuals to process their experiences—and spearheaded the publication of Charlie Mike: An Anthology of Military Life, a compilation of participant stories. Although he no longer runs the workshop, his advocacy for veterans and his commitment to their educational journey remain a driving force in his career.

Your tour is led by program leadership who will walk you through what to expect in the program, career opportunities, and how to prepare for enrollment. Because choosing a career path is a big decision, we strongly encourage you to bring your parents, guardians, or support people along. Their questions and perspectives help make the experience even more valuable, and it ensures everyone involved understands the program, costs, and opportunities.

Tours typically last about an hour, and every visit helps future students see why this program is one of the most exciting and fast-growing offerings at Aims. We look forward to meeting you and helping you take the next step toward an aviation career.

Please note: the Aircraft Maintenance Training Center is a live, working hangar. For safety reasons, we recommend wearing closed-toe shoes suitable for walking through an active training environment. Open-toe shoes, flip flops, sandals, and similar footwear are not permitted during the tour. Safety glasses and hearing protection will be provided if needed.

If you’re a Colorado-certified nurse aide seeking new career challenges, the Acute Care Nurse Aide Certificate at Aims Community College is the perfect way to advance your skills. Due to high demand from local hospitals for specialized CNAs, Aims offers the first program of its kind in Northern Colorado, designed to help you transition into acute care settings with confidence.

This five-week certificate program includes 90 hours of advanced CNA training, covering skills such as sterile techniques, cardiovascular monitoring, urinary care, and more—well beyond the state board’s standard requirements. You’ll also participate in a 30-hour clinical rotation to practice what you’ve learned in a real-world acute care environment.

Much has been said about the toll of cell phones and AI in the classroom, but recent findings show that traditional classroom computer use may negatively impact learning.

In this session, Dr. Rebecca Sailor will provide a summary/review of Dr. Jared Cooney Horvath's new book, The Digital Delusion, which describes reasons classroom computers may negatively impact some kinds of learning, how to mediate those effects, and why a return to some old school technologies like paper and pencils might help.

If you’re a Colorado-certified nurse aide seeking new career challenges, the Acute Care Nurse Aide Certificate at Aims Community College is the perfect way to advance your skills. Due to high demand from local hospitals for specialized CNAs, Aims offers the first program of its kind in Northern Colorado, designed to help you transition into acute care settings with confidence.

This five-week certificate program includes 90 hours of advanced CNA training, covering skills such as sterile techniques, cardiovascular monitoring, urinary care, and more—well beyond the state board’s standard requirements. The number of balloons available varies each year; typically, 10-12 hot air balloons launch from the Aims campus at the Great Aardvark Embark. They are not to be offered, sold or given away.

Attendance & Invitations

While the event is open to all employees, it is specifically curated for those who have joined the college within the last three months.

New Hires
Employees hired within the last three months will receive a direct email invitation with a Google Calendar link to RSVP.

Current Employees
Staff and Faculty members who have been with Aims longer but wish to attend or reconnect are encouraged to join and can register by emailing CPD@aims.edu.

All attendees should confirm their availability with their supervisor before registering or accepting the invitation.

Key Objectives

Networking: Facilitates connections between peers across various departments and provides face-to-face interaction with college leadership, including the President, Executive Vice President, and Cabinet members.

Cultural Alignment: Offers insight into the unique Aims culture and the shared values practiced within the institution.

Resource Navigation: Provides a dedicated space for employees to discover internal support systems and departmental resources through informational tables and presentations.

Logistics

Participants are provided with a light breakfast and lunch. Attendees are asked to bring a refillable water bottle and note-taking materials. For those requiring specfic accommodations to participate, please contact George Bielinksi at george.bielinksi@aims.edu in advance.
